35004 2019-01-14 to 2019-05-04 Patrick Plattet 3.00 This asynchronous class offers a virtual cultural anthropology "field school" experience. It features authentic multimedia data collected in the Circumpolar North. Students get hands-on practice with methods and analytic techniques that include: participant observation, semi-structured interviews, linguistic analysis, multimodal interaction analysis, spatial mapping, visual/semoitic analysis, etc. This asynchronous distance course uses a novel, NSF- supported online platform called SELIN to guide students in learning how to do ethnographic fieldwork. Through the completion of online modules designed by UAF anthropology faculty, students learn "how to see," "how to listen," "how to describe," and "how to analyze" following a bottomup approach which features authentic ethnographic multimedia data collected in the Circumpolar North. Modules take students through increasingly advanced ethnographic concerns and methods, which may include: participant observation, semi-structured interviews, linguistic analysis, multimodal interaction analysis, spacial mapping, visual/semiotic analysis, etc.
